How Long Does SEO Take? A Realistic Timeline

A straight answer on SEO timelines: what happens in month 1, 3, 6 and 12, and what speeds results up or slows them down.

Everyone asking about SEO wants the same number: how many months until it works. The honest answer is a range, and where you land in it depends on your site, your competition and how much gets fixed early. Here is what a typical timeline looks like.

Months 1–2: Foundations

This phase is mostly invisible from the outside. We audit the site, fix crawl and indexing problems, research keywords and decide which pages should target what. You will see technical scores improve, but rankings rarely move much yet. See how we do this in our SEO audit and keyword research steps.

Months 3–4: First signals

Optimised pages get re-crawled, new content starts appearing in search, and low-competition keywords begin to move. Impressions and clicks usually rise before enquiries do. This is the point where reporting starts to show a trend rather than noise.

Months 5–8: Compounding

Pages that ranked on page two move to page one, authority builds through quality links, and the content published earlier begins to earn traffic. This is typically where leads and sales start to be noticeable.

Months 9–12 and beyond

Competitive keywords become realistic targets. The gains are steady rather than sudden, which is why SEO tends to get cheaper per lead over time, unlike paid ads where the cost resets every month.

What speeds it up or slows it down

  • Faster: an established domain, a technically clean site, less competitive keywords, and quick approvals on content and fixes.
  • Slower: a brand-new domain, highly competitive terms, thin content, slow implementation, or a site with existing penalties.

A warning about guarantees

Nobody controls Google, so anyone who guarantees a #1 ranking in 30 days is either guessing or cutting corners that can hurt you later. A good agency commits to documented work and transparent reporting, and tells you honestly what a realistic range looks like for your market.
